Meet the Japa Team

Sheryl Utal

CEO

  • Sheryl became passionate about optimizing her potential over 15 years ago after conventional treatment for an autoimmune disease diagnosis failed. She took her health into her own hands and was determined to be the most vibrant and joyous version of herself possible.
  • In 2013 she founded Red Diamond Yoga, a large yoga studio in LA and built a strong reputation for inspiring people through yoga, breath-work, energy healing, fitness and mindfulness.
  • After five and half years and close to 40,000 students, she sold Red Diamond in 2018 to build Japa Health.
  • Sheryl believes everyone has the capacity to heal and holds a strong vision for a world of empowered, healthy people.

Layna Dakin

COO

  • 20 years’ experience leading wellness teams to help transform the lives of tens of thousands of people through yoga, fitness, meditation and mindfulness.
  • Passionate about inspiring people to embrace their full potential through small daily practices.
  • Committed to keeping it real.
  • Has studied with some of the most recognizable and influential teachers in wellness including Baron Baptiste, Annie Carpenter and Maty Ezraty.
  • Master teacher trainer for over a decade.
  • Has personally taught tens of thousands of public yoga, fitness and mediation classes to tens of thousands of people.

Dr. Alexis Cowan

Chief Scientific Officer

  • Dr. Alexis Cowan received her PhD in molecular biology from Princeton University, specializing in the metabolic effects of nutritional and exercise interventions. She is currently a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania studying microbiome-diet interactions in both health and disease (i.e., cancer).
  • Alexis is passionate about health and wellness at a visceral level. Her healing journey led her to overcome childhood obesity--losing over 100lbs during high school--an eating disorder, and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Her health challenges and successes have given her invaluable wisdom into what true healing looks and feels like, and have empowered her to effectively support others on their health journeys. Alexis has deep recognition for and appreciation of the interplay between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels of being, and how harmonization across these levels is absolutely essential to achieving health in a holistic sense.
  • She is passionate about spearheading a new paradigm of N=1 personalized medicine into the mainstream, elevating and empowering individuals from all walks of life to find and fuel their vitality so that they may embrace their soul's higher purpose here on the planet.

Nicolas Georgescu, Ph.D.

  • Senior Data Scientist with nearly a decade’s experience in high-level mathematics, data analysis, and machine learning.
  • Graduated high school and started college at age 15; obtained PhD with 10 papers (more than double the average for the department).
  • Experience working for a major agri-tech company on multiple projects related to nutrition and sustainability.
  • Vegan for 5+ years, very passionate about consciousness related to food and ethics.
